New billboards go up

She said another super billboard is planned for Gillooly's Farm where a 90m structure already stands.

The newest billboards in Bedfordview have been put up on Van der Linde Road.

Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys is not happy about the structure, saying a gantry should not be put up there.

“The structure has reduced the size of the pavement on either side and the lives of the many children who walk to and from school daily are put in danger. They have to walk on the already narrow Van der Linde Road. Are we really going to endanger people’s lives for revenue?” asked Clr Humphreys.

She said more areas in the suburb are earmarked for the construction of billboards.

Clr Humpreys said construction could start soon for another billboard along Van Buuren Road.

The board will be constructed opposite the Village View Shopping Centre, in the same vicinity as the illegal gantry that was taken down in 2015 following a court order.

Clr Humphreys said, despite her objections to applications for billboards, applicants go ahead and put up the structures before approval is given.

“It is frustrating. There are six applications that I am going to object to, but this does not help. They simply just go and put them up everywhere without permission,” said Clr Humphreys.
