St Andrew’s rowers shine at Championships

The event took place at Roodeplaat Dam over three days.

The St Andrew’s Schools for Girls rowing club recently took part in the pinnacle of the schools’ racing event of the season, the South African Schools Championships.

The event took place at Roodeplaat Dam over three days.

On the Friday, the girls participated in the small boat events, namely the single scull and pairs.

The girls ended the day with the following results:

In the U/16 scull event Storme Buckle took first place while Nadia Gaspari and Kiara Cornelius took first in the open pairs event.

“On Saturday, we had some very exciting results with our U/14s really stepping up and getting two of their quads into the final. We also got both open doubles into their final and were able to put three fours on the water for our open fours race,” said the school’s Ms Daniella Rossouw.

The U/14 quads Sierra Rose, Christina Paptheodorou, Thandolwethu Makhaza, Sarah Hindley and Khanyi Dlamini came third while the U/16 quad of Storme Buckle, Erin Hallaby, Jiaming Li, Katherine Bean and Jade Texeira took first place.

The open fours of Nadia Gaspari, Kiara Cornelius, Alexandra De Sousa, Cara Nel and Imameleng Leeuw took first.

On Sunday the U/16 double team of Storme Buckle and Erin Hallaby took first place.

The open second quad, Simone Luis, Emily Pollock, Madison Sharples, Solyle Frankle and Jade Texeira also took first place.

The open first quad, Sigourney Griffin-Ellis, Elizabeth Grose, Tahne Badenhorst, Jiaming Li and Wyome Frankle took third place.

“Overall the girls had a fantastic weekend of racing and they reaped the benefits of their hard work and training over the past few months. St Andrew’s finished as the second girls school overall – only 20 points behind St Mary’s and can be very proud of their efforts to achieve this amazing result,” said Ms Rossouw.
