Safety, a priority for ECID

"If community members hear this siren they should not leave their cars before ensuring that their car is locked."

Motorists will be pleased to know that anti-jamming devices will be installed in the Edenvale City Improvement District.

Manager of the ECID, Ms Linda Mckenzie, said the anti-jamming devices will be installed with the hope that theft of motor vehicles will be prevented.

The NEWS reported as recently as November 2016 that the jamming of motorists’ remote signals is a concern for the communities of Edenvale and Bedfordview.

Ms McKenzie explained to the NEWS that car jamming occurs when criminals block a car’s remote signal by using another remote.

She said this is achieved when the criminals press a remote button for an extended period of time while motorists try to lock their vehicles.

The criminals’ remote signal prevents the motorist’s signal from working.

According to Ms McKenzie garage remotes can be used to prevent motorists from locking their cars.

She said the anti-jamming devices will be placed in hot spots where these crimes are taking place.

The devices will cover an area of 200 to 300 metres.

“I am over the moon about this,” explained an excited Ms McKenzie.

Ms McKenzie said the way the the anti-jamming devices work is by setting off an alarm.

She said an alarm will go off to alert motorists if someone is trying to prevent them from locking their car.

“If community members hear this siren they should not leave their cars before ensuring that their car is locked,” said Ms McKenzie.

Ms McKenzie said the addition of the anti-jamming measures form part of the advanced security service provided by the ECID.

She said notice boards will be put up to inform community members if they are in an area covered by the anti-jamming devices.

She thanked ADT security for sponsoring the devices.
