Bowlers excel at champs

The championships took place from February 10 to 12.

Three members of the Bedfordview Country Club’s Bowls Section were selected to participate in the annual Bowls South Africa Masters Singles Championship held at Wanderers.

The championships took place from February 10 to 12.

Sixteen men and 16 women were selected to play in the Open Masters, a prestigious event on the BSA calendar. Divided into two sections, they play seven games with the winners of the respective sections playing in the final for the coveted trophy.

The event also included two Australian Internationals, namely Barrie Lester and Carla Krizanic. Barrie got one silver and one gold medal and Carla took two gold medals at the recent World Championship held in New Zealand in November 2016.

Colleen Piketh (44) has been selected to play in the Masters evey year since 1999, except 2009.

She has achieved five gold medals, three silver and seven bronze medals in the 18 years she has competed in this event. In winning gold this year, she surpassed the previous record of four titles and now holds the record of five Masters Singles Titles.

In this year’s final, Colleen came up against her friend and fellow club mate, Jacqui Janse van Rensburg (28), who came through her section with six wins and one loss.

Jacqui started off in the BSA Junior Masters and has featured in tree Junior finals, achieving two gold medals and one silver.

This year she valiantly contested in the open final and achieved a silver medal.

Roxanne Tingle (22) has played in the Junior Masters for the last seven years and has achieved two bronze, one silver and now in 2017 she took gold.
