UPDATE: Sebenza SAPS has corrected a statement issued to the NEWS earlier today, now stating the suspect was not granted bail. Correcting the information initially provided to the NEWS, Sergeant Sharon Tsotsotso, spokesperson of the Sebenza SAPS said the suspect will apply for bail at his next court appearance.

A 34-year-old man transporting a girl (3) from crèche, appeared in court today on a charge of rape.

Sergeant Sharon Tsotsotso, spokesperson of the Sebenza SAPS, said on February 13 the child’s grandmother became concerned about her granddaughter’s well-being when the man hired to transport the child to and from a Kempton Park West crèche had not arrived at the normal drop-off time of 4.30pm at Thornhill Estate.

Sgt Tsotsotso said when the man and child arrived at 7.40pm, the grandmother asked the driver why he was late.
“The driver became overly aggressive towards the grandmother and blamed the traffic for being late. Once the child was at home the grandmother asked the child what had happened,” said Sgt Tsotsotso.
“The girl told her grandmother that she had been instructed by the driver to not tell her grandmother what had happened,” said Sgt Tsotsotso.

“The concerned grandmother began undressing the child and pretended to get a bath ready for the young girl in order to determine what had happened.”
Sgt Tsotsotso said while the grandmother was undressing and checking the girl, she noticed a discharge in the child’s underwear.
The child was taken to Sunninghill Hospital where it was determined that she had been sexually assaulted.
“It was found that the discharge in the child’s underwear was semen.”
Sgt Tsotsotso said a case of rape was opened at the Sandton SAPS and the case has since been transferred to the Sebenza SAPS.
“The child could not tell the SAPS or her grandmother where the rape had occurred,” said Sgt Tsotsotso.
She said with the assistance of the grandmother, the SAPS arrested the suspect in Thornhill Estate.

“A Zimbabwean national appeared in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court today on a charge of rape,” said Sgt Tsotsotso.
