Police trainees link car at shopping centre to a crime

"Once the vehicle had been checked out it was found to be connected to a crime in Mpumalanga,"

The vigilance of three police trainees on patrol at Greenstone Shopping Centre led to the detainment of a suspicious vehicle.

Edenvale SAPS head of Social Crime Prevention Sergeant Jacob Mashile said the trainees were patrolling the parking area and noticed the suspicious vehicle.

“Once the vehicle had been checked out it was found to be connected to a crime in Mpumalanga,” said Sgt Mashile.

One of the three trainee constables said they had noticed the car on December 19 already.

She said the way in which the car had been parked and the fact that it had been there for an extended period deemed it suspicious.

Sgt Mashile said having the trainees from the Ekurhuleni North Cluster at the shopping centre gave the police greater manpower.

The Ekurhuleni North Cluster launched an operation over the festive season which saw a greater police presence at shopping centres and this has been bolstered by the use of trainee police officers.
