EMM responds to claims of shoddy workmanship

The standard of workmanship has much to be desired

EDITOR – What has our country come to? We have had contractors who claim to be the best thing since sliced bread, and once they have finished I have to go and repair half the stuff they have installed or repaired.

I might not have an electrician’s licence but know more about electricity than most so called electricians.

We recently had a mains box in our street start burning and the neighbours had to get out fire extinguishers to kill the fire.

The council electricians came and repaired the damage around midnight.

The standard of workmanship has much to be desired. If this is what it has come to then it’s no wonder all our systems are in such a shambles.

The bottom plate where the cables are to come through has been partially burnt away and the cables have been connected without any glands as would be the norm. This has been now three weeks and still left in this state.

It smacks the same when the councillor in one of the earlier editions pointed out a water leak where they apparently put a wooden plug into the pipe to stop the leak, sad to say this has not helped.

It all goes to naught if all of us try our damndest to save water in all forms and ways and the councils carries on in a lackadaisical form and does nothing to come to the party.

We’ll try and they just don’t care.

When will they pull up their socks and conform?

WILLY PITTNER.

EDITOR’S COMMENT – In response to the letter, Mr Themba Gadebe spokesperson of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality commented as follows:

The meter did catch fire as the resident had stated. Only temporary repairs were carried out by the standby team in an effort to ensure all consumers had their power restored.

The City’s Energy workshop personnel are obtaining all the required material and making necessary arrangements to carryout permanent repair work.

The replacement of the box and repairs to the service connection cables have been scheduled.

Residents will be notified of the planned repair works as power needs to be off to make way for the work.
