SAPS urge residents to be aware and alert

"You can replace property but you cannot replace lives"

The Edenvale SAPS recently identified crimes of concern taking place in the area.
Although all crime concerns the SAPS, Colonel Robbie Roberts station commander of the Edenvale SAPS said theft out of motor vehicles and armed robberies in Edenvale are of a concern.
“Often it is laptops, cellphones and tablets that get stolen out of motor vehicles,” said Col Roberts.
He said the best way to prevent this from happening is by not leaving any valuables either in the car or in the boot of the car.
“Rather take your valuables with you or leave them at home,” said Col Roberts.
He said armed robberies mainly happen in the streets.
“People will be waiting in their car, in their driveway and then they are robbed,” said Col Roberts.
“Don’t wait in the driveway. A car can block you in, and then you’ll get robbed,” said Col Roberts.
He said the best way to combat this type of crime is for residents and motorists to be alert and not wait in driveways.
Colonel Roberts said if community members do find themselves in a robbery situation they must remain calm.
“People must not fight back or aggravate the robbers. You can replace property but you cannot replace lives,” said Col Roberts.
He said once the robbers have fled the victim must contact the SAPS, a security company or Edenvale Community Police Forum as soon as possible.
“Try to remember as much as possible about the robbery. The event will be traumatic but by remembering details it will assist the SAPS in the follow up,” said Col Roberts.

Details that victims can try to remember to assist the SAPS include:

  • Clothing of the robbers.
  • Facial features such as beards and hair.
  • Tattoos or scars.
  • Types of shoes worn.
  • The type of getaway vehicle.
  • Defining features of getaway vehicles, such as colour or markings.
  • Registration numbers of the vehicle.
