Ins-and-outs of a traffic circle

As a motorist, the most frustrating thing is a driver behind you hooting for you to go while you don't have the right of way.

For most motorists, negotiating a traffic circle is not an issue but for some, a traffic circle seems to be the most confusing law in the history of traffic laws.

In fact, many motorists do not seem to know that there is a difference between a traffic circle and a stop sign.

As a motorist, the most frustrating thing is a driver behind you hooting for you to go while you don’t have the right of way.

Getting through a traffic circle can be a nightmare at times, especially when motorists are not patient.

But according to the Arrive Alive website, a traffic circle does have some advantages.

These advantages include:

  •  Traffic calming.
  •  Reduction of angle and head-on crashes.
  •  Reduction of crash severity.
  •  Improvement of intersection capacity.
  •  Aesthetic improvements.

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said right of way must be given to the person approaching from the right who is already in the circle.

“Other than that, courtesy must prevail so that the vehicle which gets to the circle first has the right of way,” said Chief Supt Minnaar.

What to remember:

  •  When you arrive at a traffic circle, traffic that is approaching from the right has the right of way, whether it is peak or off-peak hours.
  •  Just because you have the right of way and you know how a traffic circle works does not mean everyone knows, therefore it is important to always apply caution.
  •  Always watch out for other traffic because some motorists fail to use indicators and some might not indicate on time.
  •  Wait until you have the right of way, unless the motorist coming from the right gives you the courtesy of going.
