There was also an audio-visual presentation by Hugh Raichlin on “The Jews of Greece” on the day of the opening.

Hugh has been a practising attorney since 1986 and has given over 130 audiovisual presentations across South Africa to various Jewish and non-Jewish audiences.

Hugh currently teaches Jewish Law, philosophy and ethics at Ohr Sameach Glenhazel on a weekly basis.

His presentation traces the history of the Jews in Greece from its earliest origins some 2 400 years ago to the present day.

Hugh looked at the influence of Greek culture on our world today and the effects of Hellenism on Jewish civilisation.

Visitors travelled back in time to the ancient city of Corinth where Saul of Tarsus preached in the local synagogues in the early days of Christianity.

Those taking part in the event also looked at the Jews of Thessaloniki which, prior to World War II, had a Jewish population of 60 000, of whom 81 percent were murdered in the Holocaust.

Hugh shared the remarkable stories of the islands of Rhodos, Zakynthos and other places in Greece.

This event was in support of the George Bizos Saheti Scholarship and Bursary Fund, which assists deserving students to accomplish their educational dreams and life ambitions.
