BSA hosts training camp in Edenvale

"The top four men and women selected from the training camps will have an opportunity to be selected to be a Protea bowls player."

Up-and-coming bowls players who have the potential to become Protea bowls players attended a training camp held at the Edenvale Bowls Club recently.

The training camp, which was one of six organised this year by Bowls South Africa, was held on September 30 and October 1.

According to Mr Brian Sayce, a convener of the BSA national standards committee for coaching, the six training camps that were hosted across the country since June this year were bowls clinics.

“The training camps focused on enhancing the skills of the players,” said Mr Sayce

Bowls players from across the country attended the training camp, which was held in Edenvale. Some of the players came from Vereeniging, Modderfontein and Port Alfred.

“The top four men and women selected from the training camps will have an opportunity to be selected to be a Protea bowls player, after they participate in the final training camp,” said Mr Sayce.

Mr Sayce said that currently the BSA is aiming to promote bowls to younger generations and will be hosting a tournament in Bloemfontein next year.

“The tournament will cater for the U/15, U/20 and U/35 age groups, ” said Mr Sayce.

President of the Edenvale Bowls Club, Mr Ian McInnes, said 24 bowls players attended the training camp, which was held over two days.

“Bowls South Africa is using our club more and more. We are very lucky,” said Mr McInnes.
