Of the two youngest councillors in the chambers of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), one is Bedfordview’s favourite, Clr Lucky Dinake.

Affectionately known as Lux, the 22-year-old said he is excited for the term ahead and looks forward to making a difference in communities.

Clr Dinake is a PR councillor, who was elected in the recent local government elections.

“I am part of two oversight committees. One is the health and social services and the other is the standing committee on gender, youth, children and persons with disabilities. Through these I will make sure I contribute to the city’s efforts towards ensuring that services are delivered to communities,” he said.

The NEWS caught up with Clr Dinake to find out what makes him tick.

“Mine is a typical South African story. My mother was a domestic caregiver to a woman who lived in Bedfordview, Ms Lynn Kingston, from when I was two years old. So I grew up in the area, and attended Wychwood Primary School and Primrose High School,” said Clr Dinake.

He said the his unique family dynamics shaped him to become the man he is today.

“I was born in the year where our democracy came to life. Growing up I had a traditional Pedi mother on the one hand and an English second mother [Ms Kinsgton] on the other. So I was able to see South Africa from two different worlds while growing up. However, once I was grown I had to reconcile the two worlds together to shape the person I am today, which was a bit of a struggle,” said Clr Dinake.

He said as far as the future is concerned, he hopes young people will gain access to opportunities.

“The future is not an event, it is now. We need youngsters to have access to opportunities and to start now,” said Clr Dinake.

Clr Dinake is also a life coach. He said in the next 10 years, he sees himself still bring driven by the same values and goals.

“I also want to be in a position by then that allows me to contribute to the African continent in advocating human rights advancements,” said Clr Dinake.

He said spending time with his partner and his family is a priority.

“In my spare time I read. I am also an active member of the St James Presbyterian Church in Bedford Gardens,” said Clr Dinake.
