Domestic workers to receive certificates

Her Bedfordview group meets at the Bedfordview Methodist Church on the last Wednesday of the month.

Preparations are under way for this year’s installment of the annual certificate ceremony for MAD Domestic Watch.

Come November 17, Ms Penny Steyn, founder of the Making a Difference (MAD) Domestic Watch, will give certificates to domestic workers and gardeners who attended her sessions in full.

She hosts sessions on a monthly basis in suburbs around Johannesburg.

Her Bedfordview group meets at the Bedfordview Methodist Church on the last Wednesday of the month.

Ms Steyn, affectionately known as MAD Penny, has called on employers to sponsor their staff members by R150.

“I urge employers [residents] to please support this event as it is important to me and to their staff. The day will be jam-packed full of fun, music and dance. The money will cover expenses,” said Ms Steyn.

She said on the day she will celebrate domestic workers’ commitment to fighting crime.

Lunch will also be served.

The event is scheduled to take place at the Rosebank Union Church.

She thanked residents who allowed their staff members to attend the meetings.

Ms Steyn said domestic workers and gardeners are the first in line when robbers strike.

“They are the first to be tied up because often they know where the guns, jewellery and valuables are. This is why I always want them to be empowered to behave correctly during an emergency,” said Ms Steyn.

She said tickets can be purchased at the next meeting and details on transportation will also be made available then.
