Overcrowding remains an issue.

"No overcrowding in terms of the number of people in relation to space available was found,"

Overcrowding of Edenvale properties still remains a problem for resident Mr Diekie du Rand.

According to Mr du Rand, who has lived at a property on Twelfth Avenue for the past six years, the overcrowding is an ongoing issue.

The NEWS previously reported on the overcrowding that Mr du Rand faced in the May 8 edition.

Previously Mr du Rand said the property neighbouring his was overcrowded. He said he often had to pick up litter off his pavement which he believed was dropped by people from the overcrowded house.

Mr du Rand said he did not feel safe.

As far as Mr du Rand is presently aware, nothing had been done and the overcrowding still remains a problem.

“I wouldn’t say anything has become worse, everything is pretty much the same as then,” said Mr du Rand.

According to Mr Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), access to the property was obtained on April 26 this year with the assistance of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD).

“No overcrowding in terms of the number of people in relation to space available was found and the yard was found to be clean and tidy.

“However, the concern of the property being used as an accommodation establishment in contravention of the zoning still remains and is being handled by City Development Department,” said Mr Gadebe.

He said the environmental health practitioner with the assistance of EMPD will conduct an inspection in the future.

Mr Gadebe said the inspection will focus on portions of the yard and the inside of the house to ensure that no environmental health nuisances have developed since the previous inspection.

Councillor Heather Hart of ward 18, who was asked to assist in the matter by Clr Bill Rundle of ward 19, as she is the DA Shadow MMC for City Planning, said a notice of contravening the bylaws of Ekurhuleni had been issued to t the property owner and the matter was being handled by the EMM’s legal department.

Mr Gadebe said residents facing similar problems can:

r Refer cases of public disturbances ,and security issues to the EMPD.

r Address issues of the illegal use of the property as an accommodation establishment to City Development.
