A resident for 11 years of the Rand Aid lifestyle complex for retirees in Lyndhurst, Ms Poultney loved playing hockey but was always keen to try any sport. Today she loves nothing better than watching the sports channels on TV.

Married to Mr Hilton Poultney, a former town councillor in Springs on the East Rand where she was born, Ms Poultney was a bookkeeper by trade.

After leaving Springs in the late 1960s, the couple relocated to Bryanston.

She is a proud mother of two sons, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She said her family is coming to South Africa to celebrate her 90th birthday and introduce her to her one-year-old great-granddaughter.
