Bedfordview comes out in large numbers to vote

Voting in Elandasfontein also went smoothly with no glitches.

Over 11 000 Bedfordview residents came out last Wednesday to cast their vote in this year’s local government elections.

No incidents were reported at all five voting stations in the area.

Mrs Jill Humphreys, who at the time of going to press was the councillor-in-waiting for ward 20, said there were no incidents in the area.

“In fact, there was a lovely atmosphere and people were excited and determined to vote. It was great to witness,” said Mrs Humphreys.

She said the area had over a 70 percent voter turnout.

“At the Saheti voting station, 2 438 votes were cast while at Bedfordview High School 1 210 were cast. There were 3 154 votes cast at the Bedfordview City Hall and 2 635 at the Scouts Hall,” she said.

The spokesperson for the Bedfordview SAPS, Warrant Officer Mduduzi Nhlabathi, said all areas under the station’s policing precinct were classified as low risk areas as far as potential violence was concerned.

“In each voting station we posted two members. All went smoothly from the opening of the station until they closed at 7pm. We also deployed patrolling vehicles that checked in at voting stations hourly to ensure that all was well. We are happy to report that everything went well,” said W/O Nhlabathi.

He said voting in Elandasfontein also went smoothly with no glitches.

Senior citizens at Arbor Village were transported to voting stations to make their mark.
