It’s all systems go for the upcoming local government elections in Ekurhuleni.
Ekurhuleni spokesperson, Mr Themba Gadebe said over 20 representatives of political parties and independent candidates converged in Germiston to sign the electoral code of conduct as a pledge to commit to a free and fair election.
“The code of conduct calls on parties to practise political tolerance towards each other during the campaigning period until the elections day,” said Mr Gadebe.
Ekurhuleni’s Municipal Electoral Officer Dr Imogen Mashazi tabled the electoral code of conduct and stated that Ekurhuleni’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) was ready to preside over free and fair elections on August 3.
“There are over one million registered voters on the ground. This is enough for all political parties to get their share of votes. There is therefore no need for violence but parties must vigorously engage in peaceful campaigning, “said Dr Mashazi.
In terms of safety at polling stations, Dr Mashazi said IEC will ensure visible police presence to all 626 voting stations. “Power generators are also on standby in case of power supply interruptions,” she said.
