Driveway hijackings – How not to become a statistic

"Please watch and observe if you are being followed, especially after drawing money at an ATM or when leaving a shopping mall."

The SAPS gave the following preventative tips to help residents reduce their chances of being hijacked.

When you arrive at home:

  •  Do not stop in your driveway.
  •  Stop parallel to your house.
  •  Open the gate if no vehicles or pedestrians are in sight.
  •  Open the gate just wide enough for your car.
  •  Pull in but only if the road is clear.
  •  Once in the property, stop right by the gate.
  •  Put the car in reverse.
  •  Watch for anyone who tries to run in behind you before the gate closes.
  •  Drive up your driveway.

When you leave home:

  •  Pull right up to your gate.
  •  Get out of the car but leave it idling.
  •  Open gate slightly.
  •  Check for pedestrians/vehicles.
  •  Drive out, park parallel to your house.
  •  Close the gate and arm your alarm.
