The SAPS gave the following preventative tips to help residents reduce their chances of being hijacked.
When you arrive at home:
- Do not stop in your driveway.
- Stop parallel to your house.
- Open the gate if no vehicles or pedestrians are in sight.
- Open the gate just wide enough for your car.
- Pull in but only if the road is clear.
- Once in the property, stop right by the gate.
- Put the car in reverse.
- Watch for anyone who tries to run in behind you before the gate closes.
- Drive up your driveway.
When you leave home:
- Pull right up to your gate.
- Get out of the car but leave it idling.
- Open gate slightly.
- Check for pedestrians/vehicles.
- Drive out, park parallel to your house.
- Close the gate and arm your alarm.
