Ekurhuleni, a city of clean water

The blue drop certification awards excellence in the area of water quality management.

The City of Ekurhuleni has maintained its blue-drop status which was awarded by the national Department of Water and Sanitation.

Ekurhuleni executive mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele announced at the Emoyeni Conference Centre that the city has good quality drinking water available to its citizens and businesses.

Clr Gadebe said, “The blue drop certification awards excellence in the area of water quality management which surpasses the requirement of the national norms and standards by some reasonable margin.

“Municipalities who according to the certification programme criteria achieve a score above 95 percent are awarded this achievement. Ekurhuleni, at 96,25 percent is the top scoring municipality leading others in Gauteng,” said Clr Gungubele.

“This award shows the EMM’s commitment to clean water and maintenance,” added Clr Gungubele.

“This includes its preparedness to deal with any incident that may pose a health risk to the public,” he said.

EMM has also been granted the second-best ranking in the area of No Drop (Non-Revenue Water loss) by the Department of Water and Sanitation for its efforts to preserve water.

“Non-revenue water has been reduced from 40,3 percent in June 2013 to 32,5 percent in April 2016. Ekurhuleni intends to further reduce the 32,5 percent through various community intensive programmes,” said Clr Gadebe.

He said that 100 community ambassadors have been recruited to strengthen the water loss programme by collecting data and evaluating problems.
