Local rowers go international

"The King Edward VII U16 squad qualified for the tour when they won four Gold medals and one Silver at SA Schools Rowing Championships in March."

Three Edenvale residents on the King Edward VII School U/16 rowing team, Chris Baxter, Nic Nepgen and Phillip Weyers. took part in a team that qualified to represent South Africa in the South African Rowing School Union (SASRU) tour to the United Kingdom.

The team competed in two regattas in the UK.

The first was the Wallingford Regatta at Eton Dorney Lake, the 2012 Olympic venue.

The team made the final, and finished in third place, four seconds behind Eton College, and 0,2 seconds behind King’s College.

The second regatta was at Bedford, where they raced in a “knockout” style, in the U/16 as well as open age groups.

The team won all their stages, progressing to the finals in both events.

The final in the U/16 eight race was the closest final at the regatta, with the final verdict being that they were only 3 inches behind Hampton School.

The King Edward VII U/16 squad won four gold medals and one silver at the SA Schools Rowing Championships in March and qualified to represent South Africa in the SASRU Tour to the UK in May.

They toured with pupils from St John’s College, St Alban’s College, St Andrew’s School for Girls, St Mary’s School and Holy Rosary School Girls.
