Yesterday, SARS Customs officials intercepted a Lebanese male passenger en route to Dubai carrying 17 rectangular gold bars and three circular bars weighing 23kg worth more than R7-million at O R Tambo International Airport.
The lone traveller was leaving the country without proper documentation.
His luggage was scanned and irregular images were identified and a hand search found these to be gold bars estimated at R 7 033 600.
The traveller produced self-generated invoices.
The suspect was handed over to the SAPS but SARS Customs has detained the goods for further investigations.
