Life in the slower lane

"we are blessed to have a place to stay

The busy, bustling dining hall of Eden Haven has a happy atmosphere of full bellies and relaxation.

Residents sat down with the NEWS to chat about life at Eden Haven.

Loraine James, Richard Curin and Deann Boas enjoyed their lunch on the afternoon of March 16.

Loraine (82), who is currently going onto her 14th year at Eden Haven, worked previously in Modderfontein.

“I’m still here,” said Loraine jokingly when asked about how she is doing at Eden Haven.

Richard (82) worked as a banker for 45 years but has only been at Eden Haven for the past year.

“The older residents often tell me I am too young to be here,” he joked.

Deann stays at Eden Haven under semi-frail care due to health issues associated with her legs.

Richard described the overall ambience as “very nice”. “Not a day goes by without laughter, and maybe a tear or two,” he added

“When you get old your body wears out,” said Richard, and even though he is feeling the aches and pains, he still drives himself around and plays bowls in Primrose.

“The home takes us out three times a week to go shopping and to go out for entertainment.”

Eden Haven organises trips for its residents, taking them to places like the Vaal and Pug Rescue. They have also organised a fĂȘte that the residents are looking forward to.

“At Eden Haven there is an ongoing improvement of security,” said Loraine. “Eden Haven is beautiful. We are blessed to have a place to stay,” said Loraine.
