The SAPS has issued drivers with the following safety tips with regards to avoiding hijacking situations.
- Ensure that your vehicle or the vehicle that you are making use of is always in good running condition, along with making sure that the tyres are in good condition, including the spare wheel.
- Make sure that the vehicle is fuelled up enough for the journey, and if not make sure you know where petrol stations are located.
- Plan your trip and know the route as well as directions. Be alert if you do get lost and be wary – never pick up hitchhikers.
- Always park the vehicle in a well-attended, secure parking lot that has security cameras and security personnel, especially at night.
- Make sure that no valuables are visible while driving or when parked and make sure that your windows are closed.
