Edenvale SAPS warns against theft

According W/O Olckers, the thefts are occurring near shopping centres in the Greenstone area.

Warrant Officer Jean Olckers, from the Edenvale SAPS, has issued the following safety tips to residents and community members.

Although all crime is a concern to the SAPS, the most common crimes happening recently include theft out of motor vehicles and theft of motor vehicles.

According W/O Olckers, the thefts are occurring near shopping centres in the Greenstone area.

With regards to theft out of motor vehicles and theft of motor vehicles, the methods that are used include jamming devices for car remotes or distractions, whereby the individual is distracted and forgets to lock their cars.

In order to prevent theft out of motor vehicle, car owners must:

  •  Check that their cars are locked, by physically testing the door handles.
  •  Do not leave valuables in plain sight, put them in the boot or take them with you.
  •  Park in secure areas or areas that have security cameras or security officials in them.
  •  Make sure windows are closed.

To prevent the theft of motor vehicles, car owners must:

  •  Use legal security devices such as steering locks or tracking devices.
  •  Make sure that tracking devices work by testing them.
  •  Check that their cars are locked, by physically testing the door handles.
  •  Park in secure areas or areas that have security cameras or security officials in them.
