Alert officers arrest four for robbery

Sebenza officers were on a crime prevention patrol when they came across a suspicious looking vehicle.

Four suspects were arrested by the Sebenza SAPS in connection with a house robbery that took place in Esther Park.

The Sebenza SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Sharon Mahamba-Tsotsotso, said Sebenza officers were on a crime prevention patrol when they came across a suspicious looking vehicle that had garden refuse and a television set on the back.

“The members were on patrol when they saw the vehicle. When they approached the van, one suspect started to run but the police managed to apprehend all the suspects, including the three who were still in the van,” said Sgt Tsotsotso.

Sgt Tsotsotso said the suspects went to a house in Esther Park and stole television sets and some jewellery.

“When they arrived at the house, there was an elderly woman inside but she saw them and tried to hide. The woman was not hurt during the robbery but they also stole her phone. When the police took a closer look at the back of the van, they realised that there were three plasma television sets hidden under the grass,” she said.

After the men had left the house, the woman used another phone to call the owner of the house who immediately went to the Sebenza SAPS and opened a case. The owners were given all their belongings and the four man were arrested and charged with house robbery, possession of stolen goods and being in possession of an unlicensed firearm. Sgt Tsotsotso said the suspects are still in custody and investigations are continuing.
