WATCH: Race against time to free goose entangled in fishing line

"This goose has been in this state for about a month."

Rescue efforts to free a goose that has become entangled in fishing line at the Modderfontein Dam have been launched.

Ms Valerie van der Klis, a Modderfontein resident said this goose has been seen moving around with fishing line wrapped around its legs.

“This is largely due to the fishermen’s waste around the Flamingo Dam. I’m trying to find a net gun or someone who can help. This goose has been in this state for about a month. The trouble is trying to catch it to help it,” said Ms van der Klis.

Ms Claire Morgan, the marketing manager for Nevada, said they have contacted a number of animal charities and organisations that specialise in rescuing distressed animals.

She said a number of these animal charities have already gone to the dam to try and capture the goose.

“As there are a number of people currently trying to catch the goose, it is becoming agitated and panicked, which is causing it to fly when approached.

“We have managed to get a humane box which it would walk into and close behind it; we have employed a person to sit and watch the box so that when the goose is caught it spends minimal time within the box,” said Ms Morgan.

She said a veterinarian who is able to handle the goose and who has experience with geese has been consulted to ensure that it will not be harmed during the capture or while it is being freed of the gut. The goose will be assessed by the vet and its injuries treated.

She said it will be released back to the dam once it has been freed.

“This is all dependent on its injuries as it may need to spend some time recovering,” said Ms Morgan.
