Local singer to compete in international competition

"I was searching for talent competitions in South Africa and I received a suggested post on Facebook and followed the link."

Local singer, Serenity Cooke, has been offered a once in a life time opportunity to attend and compete in an international talent search audition.

After winning her audition, Serenity will travel to the United States of America next year to compete at the International Presentation of Performers (IPOP), to be hosted in Los Angeles in July 2016.

IPOP is an international scouting company that looks for new and undiscovered talent to mentor and break into the entertainment industry. Serenity said she came across the competition while searching for talent competitions in South Africa.

“I was searching for talent competitions in South Africa and I received a suggested post on Facebook and followed the link. I read up on it and it turned out that there was an audition coming up that weekend. I registered for the audition and went in to audition that weekend.

“The audition went really well and that is how it started,” said Serenity.

The judges select the top 20 performers in each country to attend their talent showcase event in Los Angeles. The week-long talent extravaganza is an opportunity for performers to be seen by a large number of agents, scouts, music producers, record labels and casting directors all at once.

These events are hosted twice a year in January and July.

Approximately 500 young, talented singers, actors, models and dancers have a chance to make their dreams come true. Serenity was selected from approximately 2 100 people who auditioned in South Africa, to go to Hollywood next year.

She was born in Durban and her family moved to Johannesburg when she was six years old.

She has been singing for as long as she can remember.

“I know I was singing since I was young. I love and enjoy all music genres but I can say that R&B is the genre I love the most.”

Serenity hopes to continue performing in South Africa before her trip to America in order to raise funds for the trip. She will also be performing at the Modderfontein Christmas market on December 5, at the Modderfontein Dam.

The organiser of the Christmas Night Market, Mr Peter Channing said, “We want to help her raise funds and get her to Hollywood so that she can accomplish her dreams.”

Serenity will perform a small selection of songs to give the locals a chance to hear her sing.

Serenity’s family will also have a stall at the market and those interested in supporting her efforts to make her dream come true can contact her on nirvanacooke@gmail.com.
