Operation nets eight for speeding

Eight suspects were arrested for speeding along Andries Pretorius Road in Edenvale.

According to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department’s (EMPD) spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, a speed law enforcement special operation yielded eight drivers who were charged with reckless and negligent driving in a 60km/h zone. .

He said the operation commenced at 5am and ended at 11am.

“The highest speedster claimed he was rushing to a cricket match. He was in a Ford sedan when clocked at 106km/h. The second highest was a rider on a Truimph motorcycle, claiming he was ride-testing the bike. He was caught doing 104km/h. The other four drivers were arrested for registered speeds of between 100 and 102km/h, and the rest were caught doing 97km/h,” said Chief Supt Kgasago.

He said the eight arrested drivers were detained at the Edenvale Police Station and later released on bail of R1 500 each.

They are expected to appear in the Edenvale Magistrate’s Court soon.
