Tips for your pets this festive season

"Pet feeders won't allow owners to pick up if they have been eating or whether their pets are sick," said Ms Meacham.

The Edenvale SPCA have provided tips to keep pets safe during the festive season for those going on holiday.

Ms Shirley Meacham, the inspector for the Edenvale SPCA, said there are a few points to consider for pet safety when families are going away.

She said that pet owners should not leave pet feeders at home in order to monitor their eating habits.

“Pet feeders won’t allow owners to pick up if they have been eating or whether their pets are sick,” said Ms Meacham.

She also said that owners should ask a family member to feed their pets on a daily basis when they are away.

“Owners should leave a bucket of water beneath a slow dripping tap to ensure that fresh water will be available,” she said.

Ms Meacham said families should book their pets in when they book their holidays.

“The Edenvale SPCA has boarding available for owners who are on holiday and need their pets kept safe,” she said.

In addition, according to the National Council of SPCAs, plans for your pets when going away should include the either of the following:

  •  Take your pets to boarding kennels. A well-run, reputable kennel is normally a safe manner in which to house your animals when you are away.
  •  Take your pets on holiday with you. Ensure your pets are kept in a cool place in the vehicle for the journey. Never leave your pet inside a vehicle on a warm/hot day, even in the shade, with the windows slightly open.
  •  Make use of a house/pet sitter. In case of an emergency and the house sitter is unable to continue performing their duties, have a back-up plan.
  •  Make us of a pet care service. Pets must be visited a minimum of once daily in case the animal becomes sick. Remember that animals also need companionship.
