The programme director, Mr Koos Radebe, said they gathered to salute members of the SAPS and acknowledge the members who are no longer with the force.

The 16th Annual National SAPS Tracker 2015 Awards ceremony was held to honor police officers who have died in the line of duty, along with the officers who still risk their lives to protect the community they serve.

The awards were hosted at Scarlet Ribbon in Greenstone on Friday.

The programme director, Mr Koos Radebe, said they gathered to salute members of the SAPS and acknowledge the members who are no longer with the force.

“This year we specifically look at police units who risk their lives for a safer South Africa. Their effort, bravery and dedication is greatly appreciated,” said Mr Radebe.

The chairperson of the Gauteng Provincial Community Police board and ambassador for the Interpol Turn Back Crime Campaign, Mr Andy Mashaile, said public/private partnerships are significant and development in any community hinges upon this partnership.

“Besides the perceived instability within the police, the awards display that the police force is still highly committed to serving the country,” said Mr Mashaile.

He said the continuous support of Tracker to the children of police offers who have died is commended.

“This opportunity gives the children the comfort and knowledge that their parents have not died in vain,” he said.

Mr Mashaile said this programme, along with the South African Police Service Education Trust, are initiatives that give hope and confidence that the police force is a caring organisation.
