Former Edenvale mayor celebrates 50th wedding anniversary

"In October 1965, we were married and continued living in Potchefstroom for a year until moving to Edenvale."

The former mayor of Edenvale and current Ekurhuleni councillor, Clr Hennie van Der Walt, celebrated 50 years of marriage to his wife Mrs June Van Der Walt on October 2.

Clr Van Der Walt said he met his wife when they were still in school.

“We were school friends and June’s brother and I were great friends. She was younger than I was and at that time, we were not interested in each other,” he said.

After school he joined the Air Force and was no longer in touch with his June or her brother.

“It was later in life when we were reconnected. I was posted to Potchefstroom when I heard she was teaching there. I decided to meet up with her. In October 1965, we were married and continued living in Potchefstroom for a year until moving to Edenvale,” he said.

He was employed by SAA and his wife was teaching at Nobel Primary School in Modderfontein.

The couple has three daughters who each have two sons.

“After 50 years of being with June, I can truly say a marriage is a partnership. I have retired but I am still a councillor for Ekurhuleni and my wife teaches in Kensington. After a lovely party for our anniversary, my wife and I went on another honeymoon to Cape Town and flew back on October 11,” he said.
