Victims flee shootout

The suspects approached and started shooting at the car the victims were driving in.

The Cleveland SAPS has confirmed it is investigating a case of attempted murder after a guard was shot and wounded during this morning’s shooting in Kensington.

According to the communications officer, Constable Mpho Mashakane, the victim was returning from Jewel City Diamond Centre in the Joburg CBD when four to five suspects started shooting at the car he and two guards were travelling in.

“The suspects were travelling in two cars, a white BMW 3 Series and a black BMW 1 series. The victim reported that when they stopped at the intersection of Queen Street and Langerman Drive, the suspects approached and started shooting at the car they were driving in, which was a white Toyota Fortuner,” said Const Mashakane.

One guard, sitting in the front passenger seat, was shot in the leg.

Const Mashakane said the victim was sitting in the back seat and was not injured.

“The victims managed to escape the shooting and drove off to Bedfordview. The suspects fled the scene and nothing was taken,” she said.

While driving in Bedfordview, the victims collided with two vehicles at the intersection of Nicol and Abroath roads.

The spokesperson for the Bedfordview SAPS, Warrant Officer Mduduzi Nhlabathi, said the injured guard was taken to an Alberton hospital in a stable condition.

According to on-scene information, the victims are linked to a gold mining company.

W/O Nhlabathi encouraged residents to respect crime scenes and to avoid posting inaccurate information.

“Today was a classic example of why we need people to confirm with the police before posting their speculations on their social media groups. Residents (in Bedfordview) were in a panic because of messages doing the rounds. Some said they heard gunshots and some say they saw a shooting taking place in Bedfordview, none of which were true,” said W/O Nhlabathi.
