MUST WATCH: Sisters meet for the first time in 60 years

'We are so alike - it feels as if we've never been apart' - Edenvale resident, Jenny Horton.

Sisters met for the first time after about 60 years of not knowing about each other.

Edenvale resident, Jenny Horton told the NEWS she never knew she had a sister. “It came as such a surprise when Leonie Erasmus, the founder of Adopted Child, contacted me and told me the news. I cried the entire afternoon – to realise I had a sister all along,” she said.

The sisters met for the first time after Joy Strydom’s search for her biological mother after her adoptive mother had died.

“Joy knew she was adopted since the age of five. It took her 14 years to find me. We spoke via email through Leonie because she said that uniting siblings could be a very difficult situation. However when I decided to fly to Port Elizabeth, Leonie gave my number to Joy. She could’t reach me so after receiving a friend request from her on Facebook,  I found her number. I called her and we both just started crying,” said Jenny.

They counted the days to Jenny’s departure for PE. “I had a hollow feeling in my stomach when I arrived in PE. I could see her and I waved. I was in total shock – an emotional roller-coaster to say the least. I finally met Joy – my ‘new’ sister,” she said.

“I am not upset with my mother for not telling me. My mom did what she had to do back then. I am just happy that I am united with my sister. We are so alike – it feels as if we’ve never been apart, as if we knew about each other all along,” said Jenny.
