UPDATE: Jewellery store owner talks to the NEWS

'We are grateful to Mr Meshack Molefe, who called for help when he saw what was happening.'

Following the robbery of the Jewel Box jewellery store at the Karaglen Shopping Centre this morning, the store’s owner, Mr Nick Badenhorst, told the NEWS just how it happened.

“A woman had just left the store after we helped her with her inquiry. The gate was closed and three men approached 10 minutes later. They rang the doorbell and I opened the gate because I thought they were customers,” said Mr Badenhorst.

He said two men entered the store and the third person held the gate open. He said shortly afterwards, another man entered the store.

“Two of the men were armed and they robbed the store of chain stock, lose diamonds, earrings and cash from the cash register,” he said.

“We are grateful to Mr Meshack Molefe, who called for help when he saw what was happening,” said Mr Badenhorst.

Mr Molefe said he was making a delivery at Spar when he noticed three men filling bags in the store.

“I ran to Spar immediately and screamed for help when I saw the bags and realised something was happening,” he said.

Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts, from the Edenvale SAPS, said there were between five to six suspects involved in the robbery.

“Two of the men were armed and two cars were involved, a gold and a silver Audi,” said Lt Col Roberts.  No arrests have been made and police investigations are being conducted. If the community has any information, contact the Edenvale SAPS on 011 553-8600.
