Arbor Day celebrations continue

Some identified households will receive fruit trees to promote food security and alleviate poverty.

Approximately 2 000 trees will be planted in various areas of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) to advance government’s commitment to environmental management and conservation.

The EMM’s spokesperson, Mr Themba Gadebe, said the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD), in partnership with Ekurhuleni and the SANBI, will continue with Arbor Day celebrations by planting trees in areas such as Kwa-Thema, Tsakane and Duduza.

Some identified households will receive fruit trees to promote food security and alleviate poverty.

“Ekurhuleni officials have been hard at work digging and lining indigenous trees in public spaces and newly developed areas of the municipality,” said Mr Gadebe.

GDARD MEC, Mr Lebogang Maile said, “Communities need to appreciate indigenous trees as they do not pose a threat to our environment. Unlike alien plants such as Blue Gum, indigenous trees do not consume a lot of water. We are a water scarce country and need to replace alien vegetation with indigenous trees.”
