Local Scouts and Guides attend Jamboree

More than 33 000 Scouts and Guides from over 150 countries and territories attended the Jamboree.

Six members of the 1st Bedfordview Scout Troop and the Nomad Ranger Guide Company represented South Africa at the World Scout Jamboree held in Yamaguchi, Japan, recently.

Both of these groups are based at the Bedfordview Scout Hall in Disa Road.

More than 33 000 Scouts and Guides from over 150 countries and territories attended the Jamboree.

As part of the Jamboree, the Scouts and Guides took part in a peace ceremony at Hiroshima to mark the 70th anniversary of the dropping of an atomic bomb there.

They visited Japanese communities in the Yamaguchi Prefecture, where they learnt about Japanese culture, took part in a nature programme in the Japanese countryside and exchanged cultures and ideas with contingents from every corner of the globe.

The Jamboree was visited by the Prime Minister and Crown Prince of Japan. The participants were treated to live acrobatics by part of the Red Bull Aerobatics team, live performances by talented artists and a fly-over by the Japanese airforce.

The South African Contingent also took part in an extensive tour of Japan, including Tokyo, Lake Ashi National Park, Kyoto and trips on the world-famous bullet train.
