Keep your pets safe – Edenvale SPCA warns

Tips to keep your dogs safe.

If you own a pet, keep them protected.

Inspector Shirley Meacham, from the Edenvale SPCA, has provided a few tips to protect your dogs from being harmed, poisoned or possibly killed.

  •  Keep your dogs in the back yard if possible.
  •  Allow the dogs to sleep inside your homes or in an outside room.
  •  Be vigilant of your dogs’ eating habits and take note of funny behavior. Especially if dogs are walking in a drowsy manner.
  •  Dog owners should be aware of nausea or diarrhea.
  •  Dogs should be checked for rapid heart beat or depression.
  •  Owners should always check their yards for foreign food, such as Viennas, mince, or sausages, as 2-step is mixed in with these foods. This substance causes death.

Insp Meacham said dog owners should report dog poisoning cases to the police.

“The community needs to let the police know, as well as the SPCA, because it helps us keep record of poisoning incidents. If these cases are reported, then more people will be informed on what to look out for,” she said.
