Ekurhuleni prepares for Women’s Month

"This is the month when the whole country reflects on the role of women in society and how they have helped the fortunes of the country."

As the country bids farewell to Mandela Month, August is another important month in the South African calender as it is Women’s Month.

Speaking at the council meeting on July 30, the Ekurhuleni executive mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele, said the city’s programme for Women’s Month was being finalised.

Clr Gungubele said it was important for the country to recognise and celebrate the role women play in our communities, not only the women who made a difference in the past, but those who continue to make a difference in our communities.

“This is the month when the whole country reflects on the role of women in society and how they have helped the fortunes of the country. As we commemorate Women’s Month through various activities, we must do so with utmost respect for the rights of women and become critical advocates for no violance against women and children,” said Clr Gungubele.

About 6 000 women from various faith-based organisations are expected to conduct a mass prayer on August 6.

The full programme for the month will soon be shared with ward councillors and the people of Ekurhuleni.
