EMM comments on pothole dilemma

Edenvale has benefited extensively from the road rehabilitation.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) has commented on concerns raised by Edenvale ward councillors regarding potholes.

The NEWS published the concerns raised by ward councillors, Clr Bill Rundle and Clr Heather Hart, on July 22.

“If roads are maintained, they will last for up to 10 years. However, there have not been road maintenance contractors since 2013. For two years there has been no maintenance done. The roads are horrific, they need to be resurfaced and resealed to prevent more potholes,” said Clr Hart.

“The councillors have items reported from almost a year ago which have still not been addressed,” said Clr Rundle.

The EMM’s spokesperson, Mr Themba Gadebe, said the EMM’s Roads Depot has the material to repair potholes.

“If there is a shortage in one depot, the other 10 depots assist. Clr Hart’s allegation that no maintenance had been done for two years is not correct. Since April 2015, Edenvale has benefited extensively from the road rehabilitation.

“This rehabilitation is still continuing and will continue as all roads are council assets and must be protected and maintained as such. In the absence of specifics such as road names, addresses and so forth, it is not possible to comment sensibly on the pothole matter. For instance, some potholes are caused by water leaks, others by trenches that have were dug,” he said.
