Following allegations of police brutality and racism at the Edenvale Police Station, the Edenvale SAPS maintain that of the three cases reported to television programme Carte Blanche, only one case was opened against the officer involved.
“Unfortunately we cannot at this stage comment on individual cases reported to Carte Blanche as we do not know what the complainants have reported. We can only confirm that we are aware of the three cases,” acting spokesperson for the Edenvale SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts said.
On July 9, www.bedfordviewedenvalenews.co.za reported that the Edenvale SAPS confirmed internal investigative processes were underway, following reports that one police officer was involved in three separate cases of alleged police brutality.
The cases were reported in 2013, 2014 and earlier this year.
“Only one of the complainants in the three cases has formally laid a charge against the officer,” Lt Col Roberts said.
A segment focusing on the cases is due to be aired on Carte Blanche this Sunday.
Various social media groups have been a buzz following the announcement that the programme will be aired.
Many residents have expressed their support for the Edenvale SAPS and have questioned why only officers from Edenvale will be featured.
Sherry Landman – Best they show the good side because our station has some of the finest. Yes they may be bad ones, but the ones we know live for their community.
Kay Moore – We have approximately 150 SAPS members in Edenvale of which only a handful are bad. You cannot just get rid of a bad cop, just the same as you cannot get rid of a bad employee without evidence. If people would contact the CPF and lay charges then we would be able to get rid of the bad few.
Jackie Allen – And I am 100% sure only the bad will be shown – not how 95% of our force are above board, do their best to keep us safe, work with our scholars against drugs, have a rape unit just as a few examples. Every occupation has bad eggs but we cannot judge the majority by the minority
