Trucks burn in highway accident

The driver of the rear truck was transported to Milpark Hospital for further medical treatment after sustaining severe burn wounds.

A truck driver was severely burnt in an accident involving his truck and another truck last Tuesday, on the N12/R24 highway split.

Bedfordview’s Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) rescue team responded to the scene at about 3am.

“On arrival, it was found that the trucks were on fire as a result of them colliding,” said Mr William Ntladi, the spokesperson for DEMS.

According to Mr Ntladi, the trucks were driving in the same lane and in the same direction. The collision happened as a result of the rear truck crashing into the back of the leading one. They both erupted into flames.

The driver of the rear truck was transported to Milpark Hospital for further medical treatment after sustaining severe burn wounds.

The driver of the truck in front escaped unharmed.

All four lanes on the east-bound highway were closed to traffic. At the time of going to press, the cause of the accident was still undetermined.

Mr Ntladi said investigations are still underway.
