Global safety campaign wants child safety

Partners worldwide were encouraged to launch both national and local organising committees that would support activities which included educating people about ways to increase safety on the roads.

Global Road Safety celebrated its third UN week from May 4 to 10.

The UN Global Road Safety Week, under the theme Children and Road Safety, placed an emphasis on providing better protection for children on the roads, and in so doing specified various precautionary measures that could assist in decreasing road accidents.

Partners worldwide were encouraged to launch both national and local organising committees that would support activities which included educating people about ways to increase safety on the roads.

Stacey Davidson, director at the Recycling and Economic Development Initiative of South Africa (Redisa), stated that there are small habits that motorists can adopt to help remain safe on the roads.

These encompassed checking motor vehicles’ tyres on a regular basis and ensuring tyres are in good condition.

It is reported that more than 1,3-million lives are lost annually due to road accidents. These can be avoided if the necessary safety measures are taken by individual motor vehicle owners.

Redisa underlined that regular maintenance on tyres produces security of the vehicle, as well as behavioural changes which develop a long term improvement. This leads to a safer environment and a safer travelling experience.
