Joburg gets the shakes and lives to tell the tale
While others remained oblivious to the earth shake on Saturday April 25, others took to twitter to describe how their environment shook.
According to reports, Johannesburg residents have described feeling the earth shake for a few seconds shortly after 08:30.
Eyewitness News (EWN) quoted a man from Soweto as saying, “I felt a tremor right now, a vibrating feeling, in the Jabulani area in Soweto.”

Around August 2014, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a tremor in parts of South Africa, recording it at magnitude 4.6 with the epicentre being west of Orange Farm.

This was the second earthquake in South Africa in less than three weeks. The Council for Geoscience (CGS) in South Africa reported an earthquake of 3.8 with two aftershocks occurring within minutes of each other of 3.2 and 2.0 respectively.
According to EWN, “The council for geoscience says a tremor felt in parts of Soweto was likely caused by the flow of water into abandoned mines in the area.”
