12 arrested for looting

Const Mashakane said 12 suspects were arrested following the attacks on foreigners and the looting of shops.

The xenophobic attacks that took place on April 17 caused damage to a number of shops in Jules Street, Malvern.

The Cleveland SAPS spokesperson, Constable Mpho Mashakane, confirmed that the attacks took place at around 7pm.

Const Mashakane said 12 suspects were arrested following the attacks on foreigners and the looting of shops.

The DA’s constituency head for Johannesburg East, Mr Jack Bloom, said he visited the area on Friday morning.

“Most of the people I spoke to thought criminals were behind the violence, as only one foreign-owned shop was targeted. Some shop windows were also broken at local shops,” he said.

He said the damaged shops included an automotive supplies store and an electrical wholesaler.

Cst Mashakane said the situation was calm after the arrests.
