Tribute to crash victim

As a tribute to Wesley, Jeppe High School for Boys will build a new hockey pavilion at the school.

April 5 marked the two year anniversary of the horror crash on Terrace Road which claimed four young lives.

“Every day is hard,” said Mrs Sue Simpson, the mother of Wesley Simpson who was one of the victims on the night.

Wesley and Tamlyn Lewis were killed at the intersection of Terrace and Columbus roads when a bike ridden by Slade Mathews crashed into the car they were travelling in.

Natalie Simpson, Wesley’s sister, was the driver and only survivor from the car.

Angelia Maree, who was riding pillion on the bike, was also killed.

For the families of the crash, Terrace Road remains etched in their minds.

“We stay in Eastleigh Ridge and constantly hear cars and bikes speeding down Terrace Road,” said Mrs Simpson.

Wesley, a former Jeppe High School for Boys pupil, had a passion for playing hockey.

After matriculating in 2009, Wesley went on to study as a coach and person trainer.

He was due to graduate the day after the crash.

To help raise funds for her son’s tribute, Mrs Simpson has organised the YOLO music festival at Huddle Park, which will take place this Saturday, April 18.

“Wesley was always fun-loving and had a positive outlook on life. It was just who he was, always smiling and happy,” said Mrs Simpson.

In January 2013, the family took a trip to Italy where they spent the holiday skiing.

“Wesley loved it. He was always active and encouraged everyone to keep up. When his brother told him he wanted to rest, Wesely told him YOLO.

“I asked him what YOLO meant and he said You Only Live Once,” said Mrs Simpson.

She added that it was only right to name the music festival after the motto by which Wesley lived his life.

Last year, the family recreated the holiday to spread Wesley’s ashes on the mountains he loved so much.

The music festival will incorporate a family fun day, which will include entertainment for youngsters as well as a variety of craft stalls.

The event will also feature some of South Africa’s top performers and DJ’s, including DJ T, DJ Skye, DJ Phizz and Vin Deysel.

Tickets for the event are available from webtickets.co.ca or at the gate on the day, and are priced at R100 for adults, R50 for children under 18.

Children under two years old will enter free.

Gates to the event will open at 12-noon.

The Huddle Park Golf Course is situated along Club Street in Linksfield.
