Five to appear in court for SAPS killings

The men will appear in the Durban, Johannesburg and Alexandra Magistrate Courts.

Five men will appear in various courts this morning following their arrest in connection with the deaths of two police officers on Sunday, March 29.

The police officers were gunned down on the N3 highway at the Modderfontein Road off ramp.

The arrests were made in Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal.

The men will appear in the Durban, Johannesburg and Alexandra Magistrate Courts.

According to the Gauteng SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Nxolo Kweza, the operation which led the arrest of the men was co-ordinated by the war-room, Provincial Investigation Unit and members of the private sector.

“One of the suspects has since been linked to the killing of Constable Ledwaba in Johannesburg two weeks ago,” said Col Kweza.

She added that the four other suspects were linked to the shooting incident on the N3 highway, where Constable Myeza was killed while his two colleagues were injured. Constable Mafokoane later died in hospital.

One suspect was arrested at the scene after he was shot and injured.

He has since died in hospital.

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lt General Lesetja Mothiba said the SAPS was grateful to the community members who phoned and gave information after the two incidents.

“Our detectives followed up several leads and some of them were positive while others did not yield any positive results,” he said.

Lt Gen Mothiba added that the break-through arrest could not have materialised without the assistance and the partnership the SAPS has with various communities.
