Morninghill hosts security meeting

Community safety issues and crime topped the agenda at the recently held community meeting in Morninghill.

Community safety issues and crime topped the agenda at a recent community meeting in Morninghill.

The meeting, organised by the Morninghill Security Association (MSA), was aimed at forging a way forward towards fighting crime in the area, especially house robberies.

Also in attendance were ward 20 councillor, Clr Jill Humphreys and Bedfordview Community Policing Forum (BCPF) chairperson, Mr Gavin Henry.

During her address, Clr Humphreys told the residents that working together was key to a safer suburb.

“The community has a choice. You can either build higher walls as individuals, arm yourself and be on the lookout, or you could do the powerful thing which is join forces and work together,” she said.

Mr Henry said the SAPS was doing all they can to eradicate crime in the area.

A resident at the meeting said there was only a certain percentage of the people living in Morninghill paying towards the road closures.

Chairperson of MSA, Mr Tim Norris, told the NEWS the meeting was the coming together of the community in the fight against crime.

Mr Norris added that there was a growing lack of support as far as the community was concerned.

“Going forward we have resolved as a community to introduce the Groups of Five Initiative. This will encourage residents to know and lookout for each other as neighbours,” he said.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Bedfordview SAPS, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, urged members of the community to remain vigilant at all times. He said although house robberies are on the rise in the area, the SAPS was closing in on the perpetrators.
