New beginnings for Friends of Horwood’s Farm

Recapping on the events of 2014, Mrs Frittelli said the group had its best turnout for the year during the Mandela Day clean-up.

The Friends of Horwood’s Farm have kicked off a new year of clean-up initiatives at Horwood’s Farm.

“The rains we have experienced since November have been beyond our expectation and although the park is rather overgrown, it is beautiful and green,” said Friends of Horwood’s Farm founder, Mrs Sharon Lendrum-Frittelli.

Recapping on the events of 2014, Mrs Frittelli said the group had its best turnout for the year during the Mandela Day clean-up.

The Friends of Horwood’s Farm was launched five year ago to beautify the popular Horwood’s Farm by planting, pruning and tidying up certain areas.

“Due to the basic gardening maintenance by our parks department, we often find ourselves picking up garbage, broken bottles, removing graffiti, sweeping up leaves, trimming edges by hand and removing the vast amount of bugweed along the garbage infested river,” said Mrs Frittelli.

For the group, a new year means new beginnings.

“I hope more residents will continue to make an effort to contribute to the community through our project,” she said.

In 2015, the Friends of Horwood’s Farm will meet on the second Saturday of each month from 9am to 12.30pm.

The first clean-up of the year was held on February 14, while the second will take place on March 14.

Volunteers are asked to take note that this year there will be no clean-up during August and December.

“This community project is recognised by the schools in the area and contributes towards the numerous hours stipulated by each school regarding compulsory community service by pupils,” Mrs Frittelli said.
