Owner in gym while alert security guards recover stolen vehicle

The SAPS recovered a stolen Toyota Yaris after it was stolen from the Greenstone Shopping Centre.

The stolen vehicle was found at the Greenstone Crescent Shopping Centre.

Ms Angela Downer, the owner of the vehicle, said her boyfriend had taken the car in the morning to go to gym at the Greenstone Shopping Centre.

He parked the car at about 5am and went inside to the gym.

When he came out just after 6am, he realised the car was not there. He went to the control room inside the centre and phoned the police.

The three suspects then allegedly took the car to the Greenstone Crescent Shopping Centre.

One of the security guards, Mr Serge Kayembe, said the three men arrived in two vehicles. One suspect was driving the stolen vehicle and the other two were in a white vehicle.

“When the suspects arrived, they tried to remove the alarm and tracker from the vehicle. This is when we became suspicious. We ran to close the gate and called the police, but it was too late because the three suspects fled in the other white vehicle. The Yaris was abandoned,” said Mr Kayembe.

One of the officers at the scene, Constable Muneiwa Musandiwa, said they received the call about the stolen vehicle just as they arrived for work.

According to Const Musandiwa, the officers rushed to the scene.

“When we arrived at the scene, the suspects had already fled,” he said.
