Bedfordview Rebels lose to Romans

In November 2013, the Romans were able to set up a score of 121 all out in 19 overs.

The Bedfordview Last Man Stands (LMS) Division 2 league heated up over the weekend of November 15, when the Bedfordview Rebels faced the Red Romans at Dawnview High School.

The Rebels and the Romans faced-off on two previous occasions with the Rebels taking both wins.

In November 2013, the Romans were able to set up a score of 121 all out in 19 overs.

In reply, the Rebels smashed the Romans for 122 runs in just 13.3 overs to take the win.

April 2014 saw the Romans field a stronger side when they again faced the Rebels.

The Rebels batted first and set up a score of 122 for the loss of three wickets in 20 overs.

The Romans reached 121 in their 20 overs, missing the win by just two runs.

Both teams went into the most recent fixture on November 15 having played three games this season, winning two and each recording one loss.

The Romans selected to bowl first, following a week of rain.

“With the rain from the previous week playing a huge role, we decided that bowling first would allow our pace bowlers to make the best of the pitch,” said the Romans’ captain, Dale Slater.

The game had barely started when the teams were called off due to a cloud-burst.

When rain subsided, the teams were restricted to 17 overs each.

The Rebels players set up a score of 121 runs in their 17 batting overs.

Nicolas Smit topped the batting figures with 56 runs off 27 balls, while Matthew Smit smashed 23 runs off 17 balls to be the team’s second highest run-scorer for the day.

Romans bowlers Craig Fox and Dale Slater each took two wickets.

In their batting innings, the Romans players scored 123 runs in 16.1 overs to take the win with four balls to spare.

Marius Labuschagne top scored with 51 runs not out off 25 balls.

He was followed by Craig Fox, who scored 20 runs off 16 balls.

Captain Dale Slater scored the winning six runs to finish on nine runs in two balls not out.

Matthew Smith topped the blowing line-up for the Rebels with two wickets.
